SART Interactive Scenario

SART Interactive Scenario

"Overall, I came away with a much better appreciation for why our circuit will benefit from SART. I'll admit I didn't start the training with this view, and I have a much better understanding of how we can strengthen our sexual assault cases by such collaboration." - Prosecutor

In 2014, CJCC applied and was awarded funding through the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) Improving Criminal Justice Response to Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Stalking grant. With this funding, CJCC was able to develop and implement a 2-day training that walks Georgia Sexual Assault Response Teams (SARTs) through the criminal justice process: from the initial report of a sexual assault, to the collection of forensic evidence, through the maze of the sexual assault investigation, all the way to trial.  Participants for each regional training will consist of SART teams from that region, who will work as a group throughout the training.  The format for the training includes a simulation demonstrating each aspect of the sexual assault response, as well as facilitated discussion of key issues from a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts.

Topics include:

  • Victim advocacy and neurobiology of trauma
  • Investigative techniques/improving victim and suspect interviews
  • Evidence Collection for DNA
  • Medical forensic examinations
  • Crime scene investigations
  • Trial preparations and strategies
